When you are the spouse of a bipolar person, you automatically become the caretaker and caregiver of the whole relationship. Because the sufferer of bipolar has mood swings, the spouse is expected to hold everything together. So the first thing that you can do as a supporter of someone with bipolar is to make sure that you are okay.
People are going to expect you to stay strong. In order to do that you have to make sure that you have time to dedicate to yourself. Whether you are into yoga or reading, it is important that you maintain a healthy relationship with yourself so that you can provide the proper support to your spouse.
You can also attend spousal support groups for bipolar sufferers. Not only can you attend those, but you can attend your own therapy sessions. Go with your spouse to their therapy sessions so you can hear what they have to say and even enter your point of view. You can be interactive in their care which will help both of you when there isn’t a third party to monitor you. Remember that you are a guest in your partner’s session and it isn’t about you and that you are there to support them.
Because bipolar can take away the part of your spouse that you loved the most, it’s important to let yourself remember the good times you had so that you aren’t only remembering the bad times. Reminiscing about the happy times, before the bipolar, may give both you and your spouse hope about what will come with the proper treatment and medication.
