Bipolar and Self Hate

Sufferers of bipolar disorder tend to have feelings of sadness, guilt, anger, anxiety, isolation, helplessness, loneliness, self loathing, and unfortunately, even suicide. Most of the time we can’t control how we feel, so imagine how it would feel if you had severe mood swings and didn’t understand why you had them and why you couldn’t control them. Not being able to control your emotions can lead anyone to self hate, but when you suffer from bipolar, the severity of your emotions can cause your self hate to be deeper. Once you feel like you can’t control your emotions and you feel like it’s your fault, the self hate can lead to self injury or drug abuse.

When sufferers of bipolar are at their lowest point, they can resort to abusing drugs or alcohol. Because feeling high can make the sufferers think they are feeling better, the sufferers can start to self medicate. They can abuse street drugs or even prescription drugs. They can even abuse alcohol. Sufferers may feel so out of control that they hate themselves for not being able to control either their emotions or their addictions. Sufferers of bipolar may also feel self hate because of the pain loved ones feel when they have to help with or live with them. Feeling helpless when your loved one has bipolar can also make the sufferer of bipolar feel like they are causing pain to not only themselves, but to their family as well. In all instances, personal therapy and family therapy is probably going to be recommended.
