Bipolar and Self Hate

Bipolar disorder is a widespread disorder that brings many sub-problems as well as the obvious. Apart from the neurological effects the disorder has on the person, there are psychological issues that create many difficulties, one being self-hatred. Mainstream medical and psychiatric professionals view bipolar disorder as a chronic, life-long illness with no cure, the only treatment is to help the patient learn about their disorder and live a lifestyle that helps control the emotional ups and downs.

When patients are diagnosed with bipolar, it can throw them into anxiety for fear that other people will view them as freaks. In their emotional low times, they view their lack of judgment and actions during their hypomania high times with shame and guilt. If they allow themselves to dwell on these negative feelings, they begin turning these feelings into self-hatred, and during a crisis, they can begin cutting or burning themselves. Since emotional issues both past and present can play a role in creating emotional instability and mood swings that trigger this act of self-hatred, they need to get help. Medication can help even out the mood swings even if taken for just a short time.

Counseling can help with other underlying issues such as low self-esteem, self-defeating or critical thoughts and help alleviate the severity of the mood swings. By living a healthy life style, a bipolar person can often manage their disorder without medication as long as they follow a healthy mental program to keep from falling into the manic and depressive episodes that bring on self-hatred. Social anxiety and self-hatred is probably the most devastating issues that a bipolar person faces.
