The unfortunate soul living their life on the emotional roller coaster of bipolar disorder goes through phases of self hatred for several reasons often then exasperating their disease's effects. In their more lucid and normal moments, they often recognize the effects and repercussions of their actions during their altered state. They often realize the pain and confusion they cause and the havoc they create.
Many times, as part of the depression experienced by the patient, they actually develop a very negative image of themselves. Frequently these negative self images manifest themselves in self destructive behaviors, such as self mutilation, burning and cutting, inappropriate sexual behavior such as extreme promiscuity, excessive illegal drug or alcohol abuse and even suicidal behavior.
The feelings expressed by these sufferers of bipolar disorder talk about how their destructive behavior has ruined their lives in every way possible. They will tell about the relationships that have been ruined because of their lack of effective communication and argumentative behavior. The paranoia that often accompanies this condition can also be destructive to a relationship. On the flip side of this behavior is the manic side of disease. In this state they can wreck havoc with their finances. Often when in this stage people will go on wild and excessive and uncontrolled spending sprees without concern for how it will be paid. In this mode, it is not uncommon for the patient to get involved in either drinking or drug abuse. Some patients report hypersexuality occurring, often resulting in inappropriate sexual activity and behavior.
The self hatred of the bipolar sufferer needs to be overcome with therapy, medication and, most importantly, the love, understanding and support of family and friends.
