When Your Spouse is Bipolar

Two people living together is a situation that can often create stress, but when you add in that one of the spouses is bipolar it can bring things to unbearable levels. Communication is an essential part of a relationship. When one partner is either unable to stop communicating at times, and then unable to communicate at all at other times there is no good and regular communication. Not only is communication a problem but not being able to anticipate the mood and attitude of your partner can make life very interesting, to say the least.

Even though many people who are suffering from a bipolar condition will be deep in the throes of denial, it is very important for their spouse to be, not only cognizant of their spouse's condition, but accept it and learn how to deal with it. The healthy partner must learn as much as they can about the disease, it's symptoms and manifestations, and the available medications and treatments. At times it may take some "tough love" on the part of the healthy spouse, to know when their partner needs treatment or even hospitalization.

Having a bipolar spouse requires a lot of understanding and control as well as patience and vigilance. The healthy spouse must be able to quickly recognize any mood and behavioral changes. These can come about even when the patient is properly medicated and everything seems to be going well. The changes can be instantaneous and be a 180 degree turnaround. Bipolar disorder effects not only the the diagnosed individual, but every member of their family and all their friends.
