Supporting a Bipolar Spouse

Another name for the bipolar disorder is manic depression. Keep in mind that this disorder affects everyone around them. It is no one's fault, not even theirs; it is a mental illness. Get and keep yourself educated on your spouse's illness. No one can fix your spouse completely. All you can do is be caring, compassionate, loving, and supportive. Along with making sure that your spouse seeks out treatment, you should also find something that can help you cope with your spouse's illness. There are support groups out there that are just for people like you that are living with, loving, and supporting a spouse with this problem.

Make a safe and comfortable environment for your spouse to vent and talk about how they are feeling. It is also important to find a medical professional that will include the family. If your current one believes treatment should only include the person diagnosed as bipolar, it's time to find a new one. When your spouse has become committed to a treatment, it doesn't instantly mean they are better. Be patient. It takes time to get better. Many believe that people who have a good support team behind them, do better in treatment for their bipolar disorder. Be accepting of your spouse's limitations. They normally do not have control over their mood swings, and they can not just snap out of it.

Keep in mind that you also need to care for and take care of yourself in this time. You cannot help your spouse if you do not help yourself. Make sure that as you are finding treatment and support for your spouse, you are not neglecting your own needs.
