The diagnosis of bipolar means you have a disorder that causes many fluctuations in your emotional and mental state of mind. Bipolar has two distinct phases, serious mania and depression. During the manic phase the person can escalate to self destructive behavior. They may have no idea that the behavior is inappropriate but only perceives feelings of euphoria.
During a manic phase the person with bipolar may not be able to sleep and will talk incessantly. He will feel like he is spinning his wheels because he is unable to focus. Self destructive behaviors kick in when grandiose delusions set in and his mind is racing so fast he looses touch with reality. At this point his common sense goes out the window and he may spend huge amounts of money or go on sexual binges, start fights, break laws and throw all caution to the wind.
The progression in the manic phase goes from a great burst of energy to feeling invincible to confusion as the mind begins to race; then reckless abandon to all rules and regulations, bad judgment and decisions to escalating anger and irritability to the final stage of sheer fright and anxiety and the inability to sleep due to panic.
There are some cases of bipolar that manifest symptoms of self injury, self destructive thoughts and inward rage. All of the symptoms of bipolar fit together into a specific diagnosis. All symptoms should be reported to a psychiatrist and treated with a combination of medicine and psychotherapy.
