Tips For Supporting a Bipolar Spouse

Bipolar disorder, or manic depression, is a mental disorder that affects many children and adults. People with bipolar disorder suffer from severe mood swings throughout their lives. Bipolar disorder is an incurable decease, but it can be treated by taking medication regularly. As a married couple, one faces great challenge in dealing and living with a spouse with such condition. There are many ways that you can support your spouse (beside the medications) by doing the following.

First of all, encourage him or her to get plenty of sleep. Adequate sleep not only can help to revitalize our energy, it also promotes a sense of well-being. When a person feels better, he or she can cope with stressful situations better.

Secondly, as we all know, good nutrition can promote good health. Your body will heal better in fighting stress and illnesses. Cook some good meals and eat together. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables; avoid food with too much sugar; and drink moderately – these are some of the nutrition basics. A high energy level will help to lift one’s mood.

Thirdly, encourage them to exercise regularly. Or, sign up a fitness class for both of you. Going to exercise together will definitely enforce the routine. Exercise helps with blood circulation of your overall nervous system. He or she will feel more vitalized.

Lastly, you can also encourage your spouse to think relaxing thoughts. Suggest he or she take a yoga class, or do a meditation at home. The breathing exercises can help them to relax and feel better. You are what your thoughts make you. Change your thoughts and you can change your life.
