How Families Can Help Their Bipolar Loved Ones

Bipolar disease as we all know is a delicate condition, both for the patient and the family of those with this kind of condition. It is therefore important for friends and family of these affected people to know how to interact with them in a manner that helps them cope with this condition.

First and foremost, respect is definitely needed in dealing with anyone with this kind of condition; bipolar people already know how they are affected. It is therefore important for their family and friends to treat them with respect and make them understand that they are not looked down upon by their family members. They are part and parcel of the family just like anyone else.

Family members should learn as much as possible about this condition. The more they know about it the better they can respond. During mood swings, for example, they can hold their family member, give him/her advice and verbally assure him/her that everything will turn out okay. Call the doctor if necessary, because normally the patient would not be able to do that.

When a bipolar person is feeling depressed, they will in most cases not even remember that it is time to take their medication. A simple act of a fellow family member getting up and offering the medication to them with a glass of water goes a long way to assure the bipolar member that they are indeed loved and appreciated. This shows them that fellow family members really care about them; this alone can ease a lot of pain for them and makes them feel at ease.
