Best Ways to Support a Loved One with Bipolar Disorder

Having a loved one with bipolar disorder is sometimes a confusing, trying and hurtful experience because bipolar disorder is that type of illness. If you wish to be a helpful and supportive family member or friend ,the first things to remember are that you are not to blame for this person’s illness and that you cannot cure it or keep it from progressing. What you must do is to continue to love the person, help where you can as well as set boundaries for yourself and them in the relationship.

Learn all you can about bipolar disorder, share your feelings with others on the matter and refuse to feel any shame because a family member is mentally ill. Accept the person as they are, be prepared for destructive behavior and delusions, know what to do in a crisis, don’t subject the person to a lot of stimulation or activity, answer questions honestly, don’t engage in argumentative behavior, allow the person their dignity and pride, give them easy to eat foods and let them get plenty of rest. Encourage them to do as much for themselves as possible and to interact socially. Try not to treat them any differently than other family members. Remember trigger words, events, dates or phrases and avoid them if possible. Include them in their treatment plans and remind them to take their medications. Assure them of your love and care and watch for signs of relapse.

Remember, caring for someone else demands a lot of giving and love on your part. It is easy to become resentful and emotionally drained. Be sure to care for yourself first and take the time you need to relax and revive your good spirits. That way you will be a better care giver.
