Living with Bipolar Disorder


Bipolar disorder is commonly known as manic depressive disorder. When an individual is in a manic state, they are very energetic and impulsive. They will do things that they wouldn't normally do such as extensive shopping, starting several new tasks at the same time, and going without sleep. It helps the individual who is in a manic state if their family members tell them that they are acting differently. It is wise to make sure that the individual is taking their prescribed medication.

Individuals who have bipolar disorder also have mood swings. Some of these individuals have rapid mood swings, while others might have theirs at a slower duration. The best thing that a family can do for a person who has bipolar disorder is to get educated about their loved one's condition. When the individual is having a mood swing, they can't be told to get it together. Bipolar disorder is a real disorder. You can’t make your loved one well, but you can offer support, understanding, and hope. You must understand that what they have is a physical disorder that can be treated.

It is very important that you show unconditional love to the family member who has bipolar disorder. The best way to find out what your loved one needs from you is by asking direct questions. The individual who has bipolar disorder will also fall into deep depressive moods. Open the curtains and turn on the television to help stimulate them. Don't allow them to sit in a dark room alone. Spend time talking with them. It won't cure them, but it will make them feel as if they are not fighting this disorder alone.
