Bipolar - How To Identify It

To be able to identify Bipolar Disorder, one must understand the nature and symptoms of this mental illness. Bipolarity is a condition that can be very damaging and one that can affect almost any individual. The disorder includes dramatic mood swings that can last days and even months, disrupting normal activities for the individual. HelpGuide.org says "Being able to identify early signs could help the individual better manage this condition. Bipolar disorder involves periods of elevated mood, or mania."

One of the challenges in diagnosing the disorder, is the fact that this is not an illness that has the same symptoms on individuals like, say, the common cold. There are many variations, so a complete medical history and exams must be performed to be able to accurately identify the disorder. Bipolarity can present episodes of anger, depression, extreme energy and optimism, impaired judgment, feeling sad and a very vast array of conditions that are grouped into Mania, Hypomania, Depression and Mixed Episodes.

Bipolarity is also an illness of categories. For example, there are four types of the disorder: Bipolar Disorder I, Bipolar Disorder II, Cyclothymia and Rapid Cycling. Due to the possible severity of the different cycles, a bipolar victim could get so depressed that suicide is a high possibility. One of the best weapons against this disease is being educated. Knowing what to expect and how to deal with each episode can drastically improve the lifestyle of someone affected.
