What Medications Are Used to Treat Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder, although more recognized today than years ago, is still a very complicated diagnosis. There are always new medications coming out on the market and discoveries of old medications that help new problems.

One of the types of medications that is used to treat Bipolar is known as tricyclics. Tricyclics are a type of anti-depressant medication. They also have properties that are known for pain relief. Another common bipolar treatment is the use of (MAOI’s) Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors. These are very strong anti-depressants and because of their strong side effects and the potentially dangerous effects of interactions with other drugs, they are prescribed with strong precautions.

Another common medication that is used is Lithium. Lithium, as well, is a very strong medication that is commonly used to control the manic tendencies in bipolar patients. Manic tendencies are the extreme highs and lows that bipolar disorder tends to promote. Lithium helps to keep these extreme swings in balance.

All of these medications are very strong, mind-altering medications. They all have side effects and all have interaction possibilities with other medications, including over-the-counter medications. All of these medications, need to be monitored by a physician and care is needed when adding a new medication to the routine of the patient. None of these medications should be stopped abruptly. Patients need to be aware that even though they are feeling better while on these medications, it does not mean that they are well. When they suddenly stop taking these medications, all of their symptoms can return.
