Bipolar Disorder/Medications Used

Bipolar Disease is a major affective disorder characterized by episodes of mania and depression. The manic phase includes excitement, euphoria, hyperactivity, elation, boisterousness, lack of concentration, excessive energy, decreased need for sleep, and delusions or hallucinations. In contrast, the depressive phase exhibits apathy, feelings of profound sadness, loneliness, guilt, low self-esteem, and underactivity.

Medications needed to treat bipolar disorders are used to provide symptom relief and are not a cure. As with all medications, it is important for the primary provider to follow the effects of the medicines and adjust the doses as is necessary as well as monitor for any side effects.

Mood stabilizers (eg:Lithium) are used to combat mood swings on both sides of the bipolar disorder. It can diminish the symptoms of a severe manic attack in a week to 14 days but may require up to several months to gain control of the condition. Sometimes Lithium doesn’t control the mood swings and anticonvulsants such as Depakote or Tegretol are used as a mood stabilizer. These medications are generally effective for individuals with rapid cycling mania and depression.

In conjunction with mood stabilizers an antidepressant is a must. The three most commonly used antidepressants include serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft), Wellbutrin, and Effexor. Antipsychotic medications (Abilify, Risperdal, and Zyprexa), assist in mood stabilization and control the psychotic episodes, delusions or hallucinations, of the patient.

Psychotherapy is needed to help the patient learn to accept and adjust to the limitations of the disorder. Patients must learn to monitor and identify the signs and symptoms of a developing manic attack. All treatments and education used in conjunction with the other help to control bipolar disorders allowing the individual to live as near a normal life as possible.
