Bipolar Medications

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that affects many Americans and causes the patient to experience mood swings. The person typically experiences highs, referred to as mania, and lows, which is a depressed state of mind. There are numerous medications that are prescribed to treat people who are bipolar, and it is important that each individual finds the medication that is best for them, as there is not one medication that suits everyone.

Lithium is most common medication prescribed to patients who are bipolar. It is said to help control both the highs and lows of the condition and is also used as a maintenance treatment over a long period of time. As stated previously, one medication does not work on every patient, so other medications such as anticonvulsants are other drugs that can be used to treat the condition. Typically prescribed to people who suffer from seizures, it has also shown to control mood, therefore making them good drugs to use as treatment for bipolar disorder. It is usually used after a failed attempt with lithium or if the patient wishes for an alternative medication to lithium. Some other drugs also prescribed include antipsychotic medications, valproic acid, and carbamazepine.

It is important that anyone experiencing symptoms of bipolar disorder to see a doctor and get treated as soon as possible. Bipolar disorder is a condition that can have many harmful effects, but is also something that can be controlled if treated properly. Whatever method is taken it is important to remember that any treatment is better than no treatment.
