Living With Bipolar Disorder

If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and have begun a regular medication routine, then it is time for the next step. That step is learning to live with the disease, not just existing, but actually living a full life.

Just because you are bipolar doesn't mean that you cannot learn to love life, manage a relationship, and enjoy a fulfilling work experience. There are courses that can be followed to help you meet each one of these goals.

One of the first steps is to develop a solid support system. There are bipolar support groups that are available. You will be meeting with other individuals who are struggling with the same issues as yourself. If there is not a support group available, you can start one, or build a group of people that you know you can depend upon. If building your own support system, choose individuals who know you well and are willing to be available in time of joy, as well as time of crisis. Be open and up front with them about your needs and what to help you watch for and be aware of.

Next, seek a job that you are interested in, or qualified for. As with friends, you should be honest and open with your employer concerning your disorder. They should be aware of how to help and support you. You should seriously consider whether you should choose employment that deals with the public, or a more individualized job.

Finally, find hobbies or activities that you enjoy. Keeping busy and physically active are key to your physical and mental well-being. It is good to have a friend who knows you and your condition. They will know any warning signs and help guide you safely through activities.
