Lamictal

Originally prescribed as an anticonvulsant for seizure patients, Lamictal has also proven to be effective in the battle against bipolar disorder. Lamictal is not commonly prescribed until other more conventional medications trials have failed, but many sufferers are taking it as a way to overcome the depressive lows during their cycle.

In 2003, the FDA recognized reports that Lamictal could be used in the treatment of Bipolar I Disorder. Though how it works exactly is not currently known, it is conjectured that it stabilizes neuronal membranes through sodium channels in the brain. Many bipolar patients are finding relief in Lamictal, and it's usually prescribed in conjunction with other medications to regulate manic-depressive cycling.

Lamictal is somewhat of a controversial medication due to its long list of side effects. Patients may find temporary relief during the first few weeks, but some people are wary to try it due to a fatal skin rash. Incidents are rare, but after prolonged usage Lamictal can cause shortness of breath, cold sweats, and itchiness which can lead to the infamous skin rash. The mortality rate is low, but any patient prescribed Lamictal should be aware of the dangers involved.

Other side effects include headache, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, insomnia, changes in libido, weight loss, increased anxiety, fatigue, memory loss, hair loss, depression, irritability, chest pain, uncontrollable eye movement, and poor coordination. Despite the laundry list of side effects, Lamictal is still currently available as a treatment for bipolar disorder. If any sign of a skin rash occurs, immediate discontinuation of the medication is recommended.
