An Overview of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder is often referred to as Manic Depression and is actually an entire category of mood disorders that fluctuate between extremely elevated moods (mania) and extremely low moods (depression). There are three types of Bipolar Disorder.

The first is Bipolar I. Individuals with this type will experience the manic elevated moods but may not experience the very low depressed moods. The second type, called Bipolar II, gives the individual only slightly manic episodes but they still experience depressive episodes. The third is called Cyclothymia. Individuals with this type experience cycles of mania and depression that are not as extreme. This is the hardest to diagnose because for many people these episodes are seen as personality traits instead of symptoms of a disorder.

Bipolar Disorder is a lifelong disorder that has to be treated in order for a person to enjoy a normal life. There are mood stabilizers such as Lithium and other medications such as Seroquel. These are only two of the many medications available and a doctor can help a patient find the perfect mix tailored to their needs. It is also advised that the patient undergoes routine psychotherapy to deal with the problems that may trigger manic and depressive episodes. A final treatment option is Electro Convulsive Therapy or ECT. This is usually used as a last resort after medication and therapy have been unsuccessful and works by using electric currents to cause seizures in the brain. It is not fully understood why this treatment works but there had been proven success with this method.

With the right blend of treatment, Bipolar Disorder can be controlled and a patient can live a normal life.
